Goals

Goals

Do you have a well defined Goal or purpose in life? Have you had it written down? Are you working every day towards achieving your goal? If not, take a moment and read this.

Ø Imagine being asked to board on an aircraft, whose destination is not known. Would you agree?

Ø OK now, the destination is known but the pilot does not know the route map. Would you still take the flight?

Ø Now, the destination is known and the pilot has route map but he does not know how to fly the aircraft. Will you be able to reach the destination?

Answers to all three questions is NO.

We will be comfortable boarding an aircraft only when we know where it is going with a pilot who has route map to the destination and knows how to fly the aircraft.

A life without purpose or goal is similar to the situation described above. In real life, destination is our goal and we are the pilot. It is not enough to have a goal (destination) but we need to have a plan to achieve it (route map to destination) and work steadily towards achieving it (Ability to fly an aircraft).

A Harvard Business School study conducted among its business school graduates point out that, 20 percentage of them were earning more than twice the salary of the rest of the 80 percent. Those in that 20 percent were also comparatively successful than the other 80 percent. Upon further analysis of the top 20 percent, it was found that all of them had a goal or definite purpose in life and were steadily working towards achieving the goal. The rest 80 percent did not have a goal or aim in life and were leading life without focus. Another startling revelation was that even among the top 20 percent, the most successful among them, amounting to 3 percent, had their goals written down. The rest had goals set in their mind.

This study proves that to be successful, we need a definite goal and most importantly, have it written down. Psychologically, the effect of having a goal in life and writing it down, makes us think about it all the time. Also, having a definite goal makes our thoughts focused. So, when we focus our thoughts, they become powerful and the whole environment works towards helping us achieve our goal. An old adage “As we think, so we become" confirms this.

So, success mantra is very simple: write down your goal in life, focus your entire attention on achieving your goal. Tell me if it works out or not.
